Why are there SOOOO many diets to choose from???

I mean, they can’t ALL be right… or can they??  I’ve been reading and studying about exercise and nutrition for many years, and it’s astounding to see how many diets are out there… Atkins, South Beach, The Zone, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, Quick Weight Loss, and many more.  Some people swear by one – others by another.  In order to help solve the mystery of this and many other questions I’ve had, I am now taking a “Specialist in Sports Nutrition” course from the International Sports Sciences Association.  They did indeed answer this question.  The answer is that all diets have 2 common denominators:  1) they all offer a structured eating plan and 2) they all suggest controlling your portions.  Basically this means avoiding 2 tragic eating pitfalls… mindless eating and overeating.  These are the twin towers of weight gain!!!  So, theoretically speaking, if you avoid these two pitfalls while following an eating plan with good portion control, along with a good fitness program, you will lose excess body fat.  Sounds simple, but it’s definitely not easy.  There are so many reasons (which I won’t go into today) why people eat mindlessly and/or overeat (and over-drink)… I would guess that well over half of them are a coping mechanism to deal with stress and negative emotions.  It’s well worth the effort to find other ways of dealing with these issues if you are serious in succeeding with your weight loss and health goals.

    I think you are right on.

    It all boils down to two things- eat healthy and be disciplined in how much you consume.

    HI!! I had one question. I don’t really like to exercise…and considering my tight schedule I don’t have the time to join a gym -but is there any exercise I can do at home through which I can lose weight? I’m approximately 10 kgs overweight for my height. I’m pretty active throughout the day, but I have a paunch and am heavy on the hips too.

    Great question!! I would recommend doing “compound exercises” which trains more than one muscle group at the same time. If you have some light/medium size dumbbells and a stability ball, there really are tons of things you can do at home to avoid the gym and save time. If you do the exercises back to back with little rest between sets, then you will burn more calories and will feel like a cardio workout.
